In any case, Ionic is a bond due to electrostatic attraction brought about by the actual transfer of electrons while Covalent is a bond due to SHARING of electrons. Hydrogen bonding is due to the presence of dipole in water and difference of electronegativities of Hydrogen and Oxygen, which makes hydrogen susceptible to be attracted to an electronegative atom like Nitrogen or another oxygen.

And yes bonding is essential - it makes substances maintain their physical and chemical properties.
