i know that one of the reasons for the words "under god" being put into the pledge was because the soviet union was atheist and the U.S. wanted to say that they're not, but i'm writing a research paper and i need a source that says something about that subject. please...help me find a source!!!!

The phrase "under God" was added in the early 50's. Try Googling or maybe Wikipedia can point you in the right direction.

Google "The Strange Originof the pledge of allegiance"
Look at Paragraph 12. That should get you started. Note the Pre WW2 american Salute mentioned in that Paragraph as well.
