Look at the periodic table to determine the number of electrons which will be the same as the number of protons (the atomic number) To write the noble gas notation you start with the noble gas that is in the period above where your element is found. Then you start your configuration with the number of the period that the element is found in. The s sublevel will hold 2 electrons, p will hold 6 electrons, d will hold 10 electrons, and f will hold 14 electrons.

Ca atomic number 20 - so has 20 electrons. The noble gas that is in the period before is Argon. The period that calcium is in is the 4th period. Argon represents 18 electrons. So the configuration would be Ar 4s2
Mg 12 = Ne 3s2
Si 14 = Ne 3s2 3p2
Cl 17 = Ne 3s2 3p5
Ne 10 = He 2s2 2p6

Ca whith atomic number Z = 20: 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 2p6 4s2 or [Ar]4s2

Mg whith atomic number Z = 12: 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 or [Ne]3s2

Si whith atomic number Z = 14: 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p2 or [Ne]3s2 3p2

Cl whith atomic number Z = 17:1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p5 or [Ne]3s2 3p5

Ne whith atomic number Z = 10: 1s2 2s2 2p6 (it's a noble gas)
