I drive a 2001 chevy tahoe and it has been pretty good to me. lately seems like everything has been breaking down. Myhusband has been able to fix it so it's not like its costing an arm and a leg at the shop. I was looking into getting a dogde Mega cab. I love the way they look. we have never owned a dogde all chevy or GMC
so i would like some input , thoughts, experiance with trucks.

I like Dodge trucks, but the reality is you will never find a more reliable truck than a Japanese model--Toyota is king for reliability. And, they'll all manufactured in the US.

A Dodge Ram with a 24v Cummins Diesel (w/o Common Rail) in proper shape will be more reliable than anything on the market. The engine will still start in subzero temps w/o the use of the block heater. And the 2wd drives are famous for getting almost 30 MPG. Power is great from stock. And less than a day to double the power w/o effecting fuel MPG. There Dodge Cummins out there with over Million on the orginal engine. Mine has a 250,000 w/o any problems. I also have a 2wd that does 27 MPG and did a little over 300 HP on a chassis dyno.

My personal opinion is to buy american. Why? Well imports tend to have credit for being longer lasting (durable) when compared to our domestic brands. But let me tell you that this is the case with extremely light, small useless trucks. When it comes to full size trucks nothing beats our domestics. In an engineering point of view look at the nissan titan which has a dual overhead cam (meaning that it has over 56 more parts that can fail) 5.6L V8 pushing around 305hp. Most of our domestics with the exclusion of ford are still using the tried and true pushrod v8s. Gm has the 4.8 with 270hp the 5.3L with 295hp and the 6.0L with 360 hp while dodge has a 5.7L engine with 345 hp not to mention that our domestics have half the amount of sensors that an import has. A toyota has four oxygen sensors which have to be changed out at 60k-100k miles. Imagine having to pay $136 X4 to keep the engine running ok. God forbid the alternator goes out because you'll end up paying $300 and waiting about a week for it to come from japan. Those import engines are good in small useless trucks but when you just increase their size and put them on a so called full size truck its recipe for disaster due to the weight that these trucks weigh. You cant go wrong with buying american. If you buy a toyota you will end up paying a lot for a part that has to come out of japan. To me thats not good. Hope this helps, Jess.

My dad has had his Dakota for the last 10 years, and had never had a problem. I work in a garage, and I see very few Dodge trucks, and about 90% of the time they are for maintance. I was going to buy a Dakota, but I sided on a Ranger because I pretty much stole it, thats what they were wanting for it. I would recomend a Dodge truck, or a Ford Truck myself. for the record GM's tend to do that, after they hit about 140-160 000km they start breaking down every other week. and randyrich, is your caps lock broken? its very annoying to read that.

if you get a ddoge. sont get the V-6 version. as they are under powered vs their V-8 counterpart. I know with the dakota. the 3.9 get s the same gas mileage as the 5.2 and the 4.7 V-8. also due to the trucks weight it will bring this engine down. I have blown away 3.9 dakotas in my 4.7 dakota. so the V-6 dont have the same power as the V-8.

if you going with the mega cab then get the cummins as it will get better gas mileage vs the hemi.

also japaneese trucks are not always the best. I know the TITAN is plauged with problems. one is a small rear end. many peopel have burned them up due to the small size of them and they dont hold alot of fluid. so towing it out fo the question with those. granted toyo are good but your paying alot for the name and my dakota will walk around a tacoma. my cousin had a taco and when he rode in my 03 dakota he said it was a lot nicer than his taco. the interior is very plain and cheap looking, also my 4.7 had alot more power than the v-6 they offer in it. so he went out and got a 2500HD GMC to out do me lol.

but its your choice in the end and get what you will like. not what others likes.

I have a 1992 Dakota with 160,000+ on it with nothing done other than what must be considered maintenance (battery, brakes, tires, water pump and shocks), and my next will be another Dodge. I would also recommend that you consider the V-6 over the V-8, as unless you tow or carry real heavy stuff the V-6 has all the power you might want along with decent gas mileage.

I have a Dodge, and my Dada has had 3 Dodges in the last 10 years, he keeps trading in for a newer model, we have never had any problems and I have owned all of the big 3. IMO the Dodge has treated me better, and imports are not better quality, its all in how well you maintain your vehicle. I will never own an import, im all american.

Owned a dodge dakota for 13 yrs. Its all stock still and it out ran a brand new F-150. Wouldn't trade it for anything. Everyone in my family has a Dodge and no one has any problems. Personally I would say not to get anything new, go with a few years old.

ALL THE TRUCKS YOU WROTE DOWN ARE ALL VERY GOOD ONES.
THEY ALL HAVE PRETTY BAD GASOLINE MILEAGE, TOO.
ALSO, VERY LONG AND HARD TO PARK, BUT I LIKE EM', TOO!
THE DIESELS GET 20 MPG. GAS MOTORS GET MUCH WORSE, LIKE 14 MPG. THE DODGE MEGA CAB DIESEL IS VERY NICE, BUT SELL FOR 40K.
I LIKE THE GMC DIESELS WITH THE ALLISON TRANSMISSIONS. THEY GET 18-20 MPG.
THEY HAVE "PRNM231" ON THE SHIFTER.
YOU PUT IT IN DRIVE GEAR IN THE "M" ON THE SELECTOR AND YOU WILL SEE A NEW RANGE OF GEARING POP UP IN THE DASH "1-2-3-4-5" RANGE FOR DRIVING. I LIKE IT BEST.

Well, I owned 3 Dodge trucks & they all had fires in the wire loom. I think you would be very happy with a Ford. I know I am! Over the years I've owned them all.
