The differences are so vast that all of them could not be mentioned. Let me just point out XP contains all of windows 98-2000 and then some. Besides, XP is last years model. It's windows Vista now.

the main differences, as in all windows builds, is the way the interface looks, the way the computer works, and the support for devices. windows xp is much better then 98, it wont crash nearly as often. i do not suggest upgrading to xp unless your computer has a sufficient processor and at least 512 Mb of ram

I will just add one more thing to the long list.
Windows 98 will very soon no longer be supported by manufacturers for new compatible software, hardware, firmware upgrades....so any computer running 98 will be stuck in the past and eventually unusable. Windows 98 will soon be retired to the nursing home with Windows 95.

Windows98 Operating system is old.
and no updates available since july 2006
Windows Xp is later upgraded version.
Latest OS is Vista.
Each has its own merits.
For general use most popular now is Windows Xp
cost around $100/-

About 6 years between release of the Operating Systems, and a Huge amount of resources required to run XP verses Win98.
There are also a lot of technical differences like networking support, individual profiles, etc.
