My mom just told me the doctor I'm going to is bad because he has a rule that he induces after being a week overdue. I don't understand what the problem is? My husband's sister's doctor let her be 3 weeks overdue and she was in critical condition after having a baby. What's the big deal with inducing after a week overdue?

Not saying anything about your doctor, but most babies will come naturally, no artificial induction needed. Due dates are just an estimate, and as long as everything is progressing normally and neither you nor the baby are in distress, there is no need to induce.

Personally I would call that a Good Doctor. Anyone that would let a woman go 3 weeks overdue is risking the life of the mother and of the baby. So really If you like the Doctor you are seeing then stay there because I dont know about you but when my due date comes I want to have the baby ASAP! I wouldnt want to wait 2-3 more weeks. But good luck. (25 weeks pregnant with little girl)

I wouldn't worry too much about your dr. inducing. By time you are at your due date you will be welcoming the induced labor. I am pregnant with my 3rd child and was induced with my first 2 before my due date. We didn't have any problems with the delivery, so if that is the only thing your mom has a problem with that dr., then I say give him a chance unless you find other reasons for him to be bad. Besides, this is your baby listen to your gut you will know.

If I found a doctor with a "rule" like that, I'd...be looking for another doctor.

Go read "When is that baby due?" -- http://parenting.ivillage.com/pregnancy/0,,jb56,00.html
-- by the same person who wrote "The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth," which I recommended above.

Due dates aren't written in stone. A week overdue is not a big deal. Two, yes. But a week? It's absurd to have a "rule" like that, given how much pregnancy varies from woman to woman.

And induction isn't the simple, safe thing some people think it is. If it's possible to avoid it, it should be avoided, period.

"The Food and Drug Administration and the Physician’s Desk Reference, the bible of information on drugs, recommend against elective inductions.31,35 The FDA “disallows” it; the PDR says, “Since the available data are inadequate to evaluate the benefits-to-risks considerations, Pitocin [the trade name for oxytocin] is not indicated for elective induction of labor.”"

I -- no offence -- completely side with your mother. Read the "Thinking Woman's Guide," do some research; think it over. Never accept anything a doctor tells you just because he or she is a doctor. I mean, after all, half the doctors out there graduated in the bottom half of their class -- !!

There are plenty of doctors who induce after a week, you have to decide if you are comfortable with that yourself. The longer that a pregnancy goes after the due date, the more chance there is of complications, including those related to the actual labor and delivery. When deciding to stay with a certain doctor, you have to decide primarily if you trust their judgement, because they are in charge of your medical treatment, you have to be comfortable enough with them as a doctor to follow their advice. If this is an important issue to you, discuss it (and any other important issues) as soon as possible, but don't just change doctors without discussing the issues and finding out if you still feel the same.

There is no big deal...The thing with moms (and you will know this soon enough) is that we all mean well... because you are our baby and we obviously know what is best for you...but sometimes, you need to do what is right for you and your own little family. This is not always easy (believe me, I know). If you are comfortable with this doctor, please stay with him/her. It is hard enough to ask some of the questions that you are going to ask your doc. I think it is great that they will induce at one week over and believe me, if you get that far...so will you! Good Luck!!!

they usually won't let you go a week overdue because the baby and mother can have SERIOUS problems. the baby is more likely to have problems like sids after birth. this is a good doctor to say that they would induce if you were to go over a week. any longer than that and its bad for you and the baby.

You should really wait the full two weeks! Inductions can cause all kinds of problems!!! Too many to list & why!

I was induced with my first at 1 week over due! Actually I found out later I really wasn't late average fist pregnancies are 41 weeks 1 day! Pregnancies with prior births average 40 weeks 3 days. I will not allow another induction... I had a terrible labor & had a c-section...

I can't stop you but please check out this book:
"The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth" by Henci Goer
The information was shocking to me! The things they don't tell you!!!

Good luck, be patient, it will be worth it! Congrats!

There isn't a big deal and it's for the best interest of you and your child. I think that sometimes it's hard for people to understand/accept the way things have changed in the medical field. I go round and round with my family on issues with my son and what his ped. recommends all the time. Good Luck

Don't listen to your mother. After 38 weeks, placenta slows it is funcionality and at 42 weeks might not support the baby with enough oxygen, so it is much better to induce labor and stay on the safe side. What is important is a healthy baby, right?
