What do you really need when you register? I want as few things as possible because of small living space.

Honestly the best thing that I received were babies r us gift cards. I got more of those than anything and it was so great because I got to choose the things I wanted. I guess it's tacky to ask for gift cards, but they were the best.

Looking back I would have registered for
diapers
bouncer
exersaucer
stroller
baby backpack
bath seat

leave off:
clothes (i didn't register for any, but still got way too much stuff)
baby bjornn (he hated it)
diaper genie (i just take them out to the trash)
bottles (i just got a bunch I didn't really use anyway had to go get new ones)
wipe warmer

it's all preference i guess...

Just the basics are needed. A crib (don't get a bassinette, waste of money ) the crib can just as easily be put in your room if you want baby close by for a few months.
Change table is helpful but not necessary. We bought a playpen with a changetable attachment.
dresser for baby clothes ( but there are alternatives to that too that are cheaper,,like rubber maid containers)
nursing pillow is great, if you are nursing.
car seat of course.
That is seriously all we needed. i have a little infant chair in the living room ($30) to put baby in when I have to do something. IT's portable so I can take her in the bathroom if I need to pee.

All the other stuff you can get if you feel the need to later. We never got a baby bath, cuz we bathe her in the tub.
Toys and such they won't be interested in until about 3 months, so you can get that stuff later.

I registered for and got one of the smaller portable swings, then found myself never using it because it didn't have a wide enough arc to pacify my baby, and purchasing a regular size swing. Used a diaper genie for first kid (thought it controlled odor well until he started solids), with second kid I just take them to the trash outside our front door. I never used the carrier that straps onto the body, but some people swear by them. Check consumer reports for carseat: they just tested the top 12 models and only 2 passed!

I wouldn't want to live without: my carseat cover by Kiddapotamus, so much better than piling blankets on top of the baby; my Ocean Wonders Aquarium that attaches to crib.

I'd have taken everyones advice and only put the big things on. So many people can go together on a big item thats 30 or 80 bucks, like a mattress or a stroller, but instead they buy you stupid things like a ton of baby clothes.

The worst part is, most people buy the wrong season for the baby. Like, summer size 0-3 months for a baby born in january. THATS a pain.

leave off:crib-we used a bassinet for a long time, then coslept, I think he used the crib for a few months.
Crib bedding-after being sleep deprived I couldn't care less if everything was matching, plus if the diaper leaked you had to change it!
Monitor-no need since baby was always around me.
Diaper genie-we used cloth-can't put that in there!
baby t-shirts-we used onesies or pajamas.
blankets-I have lots of old grannies that made me blankets-the flannel ones weren't used that much
swing-my son hated it! I used the bouncer more-it had a vibrating feature to soothe.
ginarmous carseat stroller-can't fit it in the car-babies are happier in slings!

add:the gown like clothes w/elastic at the bottom-easy to change baby in.
Crib/bassinet sheets for when son slept in there, could have used more than one set!
larger clothes and preemie clothes-we just had size 0-3 months, didn't fit son at birth because they were too large, then he outrgrew the 0-3 months really fast! I could have clothed quads with all of the 0-3 month stuff!
booties and caps-especially if baby is born in winter
socks-for some reason I didn't add that and my poor son needed them!
slings-got into them later-wish I started that earlier-so easy to use and great for baby! I'm a DD, my boobs didn't harm my son in it, still slinging 16 months later with the big knockers!
cloth diapers-better for baby, better for environment, better for wallet-www.diaperpin.com for a directory (people will think you are nuts if you do this lol)
and all of those little things that add up in price:booger suckers, nail clippers, lotions, soaps, thermometers, towels, washclothes, medicine syringes to squirt in baby side of mouth, baby tub-they are cheap by themselves but add up if you buy them yourself.
good luck!

I wouldn't register at all. I only received 4 things from my list and actually used only one of them which was the Aquarium bouncer. I asked for a sling and got one but I couldn't use it, almost dropped my son from it- turns out that big chested women have a tough time with them. Sleep sacks were useless. My favorite gifts were the handmade quilts and afghans that were given us. You just can't have too many blankets and handmade is always very special.

Definitely put the expensive stuff on and leave off clothes, bibs, etc. One thing I never had with my first two that I got for the third is one of the little mesh seats that you just sit in the bathtub to bathe baby. I had a plastic tub that you filled with water for the first two and it was always a real pain, and baby always slipped down! Definitely, the mesh bath seat.

What I would ask for...

A crib with a drawer underneath or playyard with a bassinet attatchment.(without a lot of room, you can fold it up when you're not using it.

A car seat, not a travel system...

Diapers, diapers and more diapers...don't ask for all newborn, ask for newborn - size 2...they can were a diaper that's too big, but not one that's too small. Or ask everyone to bring one package to the shower as part of the gift.

A portable swing or bouncey chair.

Bottles, even if you plan to breastfeed, bottles are always good...you never know when you'll switch to formula...

Wipes, lots and lots of them...

Onesies, and sleeper...don't worry about the cute little clothes too much, you can always get them later, besides, you'll get them even if you don't ask for them...

Formula, even if you plan to breastfeed, it's good to have on hand, so if someone else feeds he/her, or you have to go some where, and don't have time to pump, etc...

Things I would Not ask for...

A diaper genie...once the kids get a little older, the diapers fill it up too quickly...you have to empty it all the time...

A bedding set, after they start pulling up, you can't use it...just ask for sheets...

A big bulky stroller/travel system...it sounds nice in theory, but the stroller just takes up too much room...

Decorations for the nursery...wait until the little one is older, so you knwo what they like before you spend a lot on stuff you won't use again...

Clothes...people are going to buy what they want, you'll get plenty withut asking...

Toys...babys are happy with ANYTHING, bracletes, scrunchies, even a piece of ribbon, and especially measuring cup ans spoons, as long as it doesn't have small pieces......don't waste your time asking for lots of toys...

Movies and DVDs...most kids don't pay much attention to them, even if you want them to...and until they're 1 1/2 -2 yrs old, they won't really learn much from them...

Shoes...if you have one pair that's good for everything, you're fine...they don't need to have them on all the time, especially if they're crawling, they'll just take them off...

Changing table...they get too big for them too fast...

Diaper Stackers...leave the diapers in the bag...they just take up room, and don't work all that well...

A organizer that hangs on the crib...once they can stand, you have to take it off, they'll just reach over and get into stuff, like baby powder, and oil...

If it's something that they won't be able to use by the time they're 1 yr old, you probably don't need it...and if you do...trade in some of those baby clothes that everybody thought were so cute, that you just can't bring yourself to make your baby wear...nobody will notice if they don't see it on them...by the time the baby arrives, they won't remember what they bought!!!
