It seems nearly immposible to get the seal in where it supposed to go. Is this normal. Do I have to work it in. Also there is a metal side and a rubber side to the oil seal. Which side should be facing in towards the engine:?? Any help would be great!! Thank you all!!

The metal side should be facing out.Sometimes you can use a deep socket or a piece of pipe to drive it in.Be carful not to cut the lip on the inside of the seal.Put grease on the inside of the seal.

This will be a dumb comment,,,(making it Ideal for Yahoo Answers,,right ?,,LOL)

Seriously,,my appologies if it's just Too Dumb.

Ok,,I assume you are reffering to the Crankshaft Seal,,,that goes behind the Ignition trigger plate?

If so,,,does it seem as if it's "TOO LARGE" ,,,
way too large to go in that hole?

On XS 750 & 850's the seal is installed from the INSIDE..

Each end Crank Seal ,,L & R ,,,is mounted in a removable cover

Your 850 has a L/H CRANKCASE COVER which must be removed.

That cover is what the Ignition Plate is mounted to,,,
and is what has the actual Crankshaft Oil Seal bore where the crank seal is installed.

You'll need a Paper Gasket also for the cover to get it all back together.
All the igntion stuff must be removed---Including Ignition advance unit (It's the smaller Center bolt screwed into end of crankshaft)
The "Big Nut" surrounding the center bolt is "nothing" as far as assembly---it's just a convenient Grip to turn crank with a wrench.

Do NOT try to "unscrew" the big nut,,it will break something.
It's NOT really a actual NUT.

Be Careful removing the cover---it can be very tight.
It's got Dowel Pins to align the cover and they are very tight.

They're positioned about "9 or 10 O'clock" and about 2~3 O'clock .

Gentle tapping /pulling/prying is about only way,,,,and Care & Patience..

Inevitable instinct to "Wedge a Screwdriver" between the parts and pry them-----Be VERY careful not to damage gasket surface.
Best to use a putty scraper type blade,,or thin blade knife if you must.

Use only very small increments of lift as it begins to separate.
Work it off Gradually while alternating efforts between Left/right side.

The seals are Tight,,,keep in mind it comes Out of the cover towards INSIDE of engine.

It's obvious once you get the cover off.

The round cover that has "YAMAHA" written on it, is bolted to the cover which "has to be removed" from the engine. The seal is installed/removed from the inside of that cover.
