Which burns the most calories and is better for losing weight and toning? I really dislike running but I will take it up if it's the better option!

Running is probably better for burning up calories, and together with diet, will bring about weight loss.

Swimming is better for your joints but you will have to work hard in the pool to burn off enough to see any great weight loss. However it is a really good cardio-vascular exercise and tones all your muscles if you vary your speed and stroke.

Why not combine them both?

Running burns up twice as many calories as swimming. So half an hours run is equivilent to an hours swimming. (depending on how hard you do either.)

Swimming is better for toning up. Swimming also uses more muscle groups and is not as hard on the joints.

Maybe you could try doing both? Running to the pool if it is close enough might be an option.

Both burn calories nearly at the same rate . The only difference may be the FREQUENCY,the DURATION and the INTENSITY of practising each .

Perhaps one can add and alternate both running and swimming in a programme.

I am personally impressed by the toning and development of the upper body and chest in swimmers as compared with runners. Aren' you too?

Best of Luck.

swimming is easier on your joints, and you can probebly swim for longer than you can run.
depends on your weight, you can do both and see which one hurts most!
