Table fans rotate in one direction so that the air is directed only away from the fan, and towards the person that needs cooling. Ceiling fans are bi-directional (usually) so that you can control whether the cold air is moving up or hot air is moving down - counter to physics.

If you want the air from a table-fan to move the opposite direction, just rotate it 180 degrees. You cannot do this with a ceiling fan - hence, the switch to change directions.

I believe it's all about how the blades are angled. In actuality, I think that the way you consider the movement of blade rotation is viewing it from above rather than from below. If you are looking at the fan's rotation from above then the blades are moving in a clockwise rotation. I know that you're asking about fans without the reverse option but for reference; a fan on reverse has the leading edge of the fan blades being the downward edge; in most cases this rotation is clockwise when the operator is standing below and looking upwards at the fan.
Take care.

Push air from table fan and pull with ceiling fan. Ceiling fan will push with activation of directional switch. Summer pull and winter push is the normal method of use.
