Across, I think sitting beside someone at a dinner table looks funny (that is just my opinion.) Sitting across at least allows each other to see face expressions, etc.

If he doesn't suggest you sitting next to him, I would sit across the table.
It's pyhsically uncomfortable to talk with someone in a booth that's right next to you.

I always prefered to sit opposit... I want to be able to comfortably see who I am speaking to...if you are more concerned about doing something else wait untill you are in private... keep the groping out of the resturant... others are trying to eat and carry on polite converstations and do not need the floor show.
