my theory, same reason we have 2 eyes. there is lots of potential on the human brain to pick up slack from other area(s) due to damage. the brain can cope with loss of matter or just loss of use of a particular area. some functions that once were applied by a certain area of the brain can be "learned" by new areas

We only use on tenth of our brain power because we haven't yet learned to tap into that ability yet. We can survive with that much but just think if we just knew how to use the rest.
