You drop a ball. after it bounces it stops. your friend says its energy is gone. where did the energy go?

Energy doesn't just go away it converts to one form to another, you see my young friend when the ball was dropping it had what we call kinetic energy adn when it had stopped it converted to potential energy so the energy hasn't really gone anywhere its just in a different form.

I sounded all scientific :D

The energy was partly transferred to the earth, and partly converted into heat through the contact with the earth and with the air.

The energy was released into the ground or atmosphere. Believe it or not you adjusted the Earth ever so slightly.
