When I was a cashier I always greeted all my customers as nicely as I could. We weren't allowed to carry on a conversation with other employees - we had to pay attention to the customer. Now a lot of these young people just talk to you at the end when it is time to pay.

Just long, busy days...

A few years ago, I ended up doing a customer service job and spoke to well over 100 people a day, saying the same thing over and over and over again. Some were very nice, some were really mean, but, we had to keep a smile in our voices no matter what. The job broke several good people... sent them home in tears! Can you even imagine learning the English language and then only be allowed to say 5 words? How can I help you? Can you even imagine what you would be saying to people after about 125 calls a day??? It didn't matter what was going on in my own life! And it's the same with a cashier. They get rude people, they get polite people. They get a little of everything. They are on their feet all day, sick or well, and are not paid enough to live on and buy anything from the very place they work for! Yes, there are some that are just plain rude and don't care if they have a job or they don't, and their management made the mistake of hiring them. But, they hired them cheaply. And, that's what they got. But to all those that do try and have bad days, my hat is off to them. It's a tough job!

I really understand how you feel. It should be mandatory that a cashier greet each customer, however we know that its not done in every store. I would not let it get to you though. Just be the better person and when she hands you your bag, just say, "Thank you, have a nice day." If the cashier has any morals this will make them feel very guilty.

They weren't trained properly!!!!

When I worked at a grocery store and a retail store, I made sure that my cashiers greeted all of the customers (guests!). I made it a point to tell them that customers = paycheck! If you are rude, customers don't come to our store, AND you're out of a job!
It's easy to get them to understand if it's explained that way!!!!

I'd talk to the manager of the store and let them know how you feel. I'd rather make changes and re-train employees than lose a customer!

it is because you are one of the 100's they have dealt with in the day. I have seen customers treat some cashiers like trash and just think if it happens a few times during those hundreds of customers.
In WalMart they are treated like trash and paid poverty level only to hear rude customers and then they are expected to smile nicely and say thank you to each and every person.
I do my best to be as pleasent to cashiers since they have to take garbage from customers day after day for a small paycheck

Maybe it's the store. I think the stores I go to have some kind of policy, because the cashier always greets me and asks how I'm doing.

Because they are not taught to greet the customer's. They just wantn to get through the day. Most young people now days just are there to work and don't care anymore.

Are you kidding? They still talk to you at the end? I was shopping last week and the girl just pointed to the register display. I couldn't believe it - my first thought was that maybe she was a mute or something, but then she turned around and started talking (in Spanish or something) to the cashier next to her. Oh, don't get me going, girl.

They are rude, not trained, not supervised, not evaluated, and not going anywhere in life if they don't get a clue!

Maybe you should initiate the conversation and be really friendly and over the top. On one hand they will try and be as sociable as you so they don`t look like scrooges or on the other hand do it really sarcastically and the will annoy the cr@p out of them!

I don't know. I think lately that store cashiers in general treat you like they are doing you a favor by letting you shop there. Don't you think they should be glad you shopped there?

Lucky you. Half the time I can't shut them up. Hey, guess what, it's really none of your business what I plan to do with my purchases, what I've been up to today, or what my plans are for the weekend (when you're a total stranger to me)!
