I tip well ... usually 18-20%, more if the service was phenomenal or the tab was real small. When I buy a wine with my meal I know I'm already paying almost triple what it cost the restaurant to buy that bottle. Quite often my tab for wine costs as much as the food. If the restaurant has a Sommelier or a Maitre d' that actually has wine knowledge and provided that knowledge as a service, that's one thing, bust most waiters have so little training on wines it is pathetic.

On the one hand I feel ripped off that I am giving the waiter this unnecessary windfall by tipping for the food AND the wine, when all they did was take the bottle I asked for from a shelf and remove the cork. On the other hand if I only tip for the food, do they think I'm being cheap and stiffing them on the tip.by giving a tip that appears to be 10%.or less.

I want to know what you think. But if you don't believe in tipping in general I doubt any wisecracks you make will be of much use to me.

At a bar or such, a dollar or .50 cents per glass works. If you are at a restaurant with a sommelier AND you ask their advice then go ahead and tip normally. If you don't ask advice or they don't have a sommelier then just add a few dollars to the tip for beverage service (or more if the waiter had some knowledge of wine and helped you pick something).

One of Wine Spectator's writers did a piece on wine tipping a couple months ago. The basic conclusion was there is no hard and fast rule for tipping on wine. The more you use the waiter or sommelier's knowledge of wine then the tip should go up. If all the waiter did was open and pore the wine, then a couple bucks is fine.

Good Luck.

Unfortunately, restaurants make most of their profit on the liquor which is why in some (not all) restaurants the food is so reasonably priced, so you should tip on the whole amt. if you are having it all at the table (15-18% BEFORE taxes). If you are having the drinks at the bar first however, the usual amt is 50 cents per drink no matter what the tab is.

The general "rule-of-thumb" is 12-15% for the entire tab.
