Back when black people were used as slaves for the white people, that is a derogatory term that they used.
It can be used as slang between one or more black people in a greeting time, because they do not mean it in a degrading way.
Another definition that I've found is this: a person of any race or origin regarded as contemptible, inferior, ignorant, etc.
So along with it being deragatory towards black people, it can also be used as a put down to anyone who is deemed inferior by anyone else.

N*gger is a word that doesn't offend Black people if another Black person says it to another Black person. But, if another ethnic says it to a Black person it's offensive. I don't use the word n*gger because it's a dumb word anyways. Calling a Black person a n*gger in my opinion is just like calling an Asian a Ying Yang.

It is a term used many years ago....needs to be left there. It is such an ugly word and no one likes to be called ugly names. There are all kinds of words that people call each other...and we don't like them. I just wish that the blacks would not use the word when talking to each other...I think that makes some people think it is OK to use. It really is a word that should be obliterated. It really has no use in todays society.

Its history and the way it has been used is overflowing with derogatory connotations and denotations. The word has been so full of hate and racism for so long that it is insulting to call someone that. Now, using it in a context like you did, asking ABOUT the word, that is acceptable.

It's a racial slur. It's demeaning and insulting.
Perhaps you need to pay more attention in your history classes.
You could also go to your local public library and ask for books on the Civil Rights Movement. Pay close attention to the chapters on lynching.

I am an African American woman and it is just a word. On the other hand many African American are full of rage because of its orgins. That word brings out ignorance in people, mine especially. Don't take offense, but is there anything with "REDNECK"?
If there is something wrong with it maybe it is similar to "n!99er"

It originally meant "one who is lazy." The term became conflated with "neger," which derived from the Spanish and French words for the color black.
It was pretty ridiculous and offensive to call the slaves lazy when they were the ones doing all the work, ne?

It is highly insulting to all dark skinned people.
The word *****r carries with it much of the hatred directed toward Africans and African Americans.
It is calling a person stupid, worthless and that they are corrupt, because of their race/skin color.
*****r is the ultimate African-American insult.

good? bad?
it's just a word.
i prefer to side with the late lenny bruce on this issue, ie: using deregatory terms keeps them out in the open, real racism thrives on ignorance and secrecy. as long as we accept these words and can keep open lines of communication, we're getting closer and closer to REALLY solving race relations issues.
as long as you're not calling people the word as an intentional insult.
