A friend never hurts. A friend is there when you need them. A friend wants to spend time with you.

Offer to put some time aside, for the person and you, to go do some things together that don't cost anything. Usually if a person isn't getting a free meal or something, they will only want to spend time with you if they are sincere about being friends with you. If they are just being polite, they'll find some polite way to get out of it.

A friend will be there tomorrow and the next, and the next, etc. Social politeness if that is all it isk, will last only through the meeting. But without the politeness, friendship would be hard to develop.

that is an enormous difference .
with friends you hang out and you certainly are not too polite ,you say what you mean ,joke around, argue, shout at ,laugh with etc.

to your mothers friends (for example)you are polite you dont say what you mean, you dont kid around ,you dont argue etc.

everybody knows the difference ,already from when you are a little kid like maybe 6 years old

if you are confused about that you must have been a hermit or need drastic social instruction.

You never really know. Look at how Donald Trump and his "friend" Diane Sawyer are getting along.

But it is about actions and interest, rather than words. Just continue being "polite" and see whether the relationship strengthens.
