I'm comming up on the 50,000 mile service. Does that mean anything? It has been using a lot more gas as well.

You could have many problems. But if its running rough I would say you have vacuum leak. This can cause more air to get into the intake which the 02 sensor would see and add more gas to make up for it. Or on the other hand the 02 sensor itself could be bad. Take it to a good VW shop and they will have no problem getting it to run right.

My mom's car did this right around that mileage service. When she took it in, it turns out the MAF sensor was about to go and the turbo was having some problems. The running rough and gas mileage was attributed to the MAF sensor and the lost horsepower was the turbo. Since she had it taken care of, it runs a lot better and her mileage is back. Take it to the dealer or authorized vw service center to have it checked out.

It could be a combination of few minor things. Your plugs could be dirty, clogged air filter, deposit build-up on the injectors and a dirty exhuast. All you need to do is to get all these things cleaned up professionaly when you put it in for the service. Ofcourse this depends on how big the horsepower loss is! But try the cleaning bit...should be cost effective and could help!

has the check engine light come on? if the light is on it s mostlikly the coil packs on the plugs, the harness connector is probably burnt. if the light is not on i would check the plugs, its part of the service @ 50 000. dont cheap out on aftermarket plugs, the oem are $ but have a 50 000mile life.
