radiation is a good point, but radiation is not what causes mutation in cigarettes.

Basically, everything which can destroy DNA can cause mutations.

Your DNA is constantly being destroyed. By radicals, radiation etc. But it is also constantly being repaired by a multitude of different mechanism. Now, the more damage your DNA takes, the higher you have a chance that a mistake will occur during its reparation, thus creating a mutation. Most mutations will be neutral and you won't even notice them. That's totally normal. The most dangerous mutations are those which occur in the germ-line and could be transmitted to your children. Thats why the germ-line makes much less replication, so the probability to make mistakes in the process is diminished.

Besides mutations due to destruction, you also can have mutations by chemicals which will intertwinge into the DNA-helix. This will also induce mutations during replication, as this part of the DNA will not be read properly.

All in all, it's safe to say, that we are all mutants. This also applies to dogs.
