We did this by taking a short piece of sticky tape (about 1-2 cm) and sticking the end on a toothpick like a flag to gently touch the rest of the tape onto the fungi. Then to remove the tape without touching it, we dropped a couple of drops of ethanol on the end of the toothpick to make it drop flat onto a slide.
Then to see the morphology clearly you can add your stain and a coverslip (don't press it on too hard!).
This should enable you to see spores and septate hyphae.
