DNA polymerase is used to replicate DNA...to make copies of a single DNA molecule. In criminal investigations PCR (polymerase chain reaction) is used to make a mess of copies of a very small amount of DNA from a crime scene. The DNA can then be characterized and compared to DNA from suspects to hopefully identify the criminal.
