Simple answer is NO they cannot, you work a week in hand and you get it back if/when you leave, this ensure that if you leave and you owe the company money through say using all of your holidays in th efirst part of the year, they can then take back the cost from you last wage - which would be your week in hand. BUT NO THEY CANNOT JUST KEEP IT

This used to be the norm in the UK. It was called a weeks lying time, your first week you didnt get paid for but you got it when you left employment, not sure if it still happens now though as more and more people get paid monthly

Yes. But only until you leave then it must be handed back to you.

yes they can , it give's them a chance to set up the wage's for you , if you worked mon to fri when do they make you wage's up , 4.30 on friday , when you leave you get 2 week's wage's
