I generally tip on the final total. Technically it is not necessary to tip on the tax, but one should absolutely tip on alcohol. It was part of the consumed food, why wouldn't you?
It's just one more step to figure out the difference between pre and post-tax, and even on a $100 check, the tax is what, $7 (and that's if there is no alcohol since in PA alcohol is not taxable) which amounts to what, $1.40 less in tip? That's an awful lot of effor to figure out the math to save me $1.
If I need that $1 that much, I shouldn't be spending $100 on dinner. I'd rather err on "over"tipping the waitstaff and let the good karma come back to me.

A couple of people here should re-read your question and answer again. The question is, do I tip the tax amount also. I say, yes. So, if you have drinks that total $10.00 and the tax is another 80 cents, I tip on the amount of $10.80 x 15 to 20% depending on how the service was, etc.

You can do either. Hubby Fred tips everyone and it drives me nuts! I tip only on the total.

i tip on the total; most people in the service industry work really hard and depend on tips for their livelihood.

Don't be selfish...over-tip to make everyone else at your table feel cheap....
Tell your waitress you used to be a server they love that.the conversation will be so long she'll ignore other tables.not to mention everyone else at your table.
Get up and tip the bartender....If it goes in her pocket you can bet he won't see any of it ...EVER..!!! She already hates him because he's causing her to lose money waiting on him to make her drinks...unfortunately he's trying to work his customers for his own tips...meanwhile she stands there pissed instead of doing anything else constructive....real smart huh??
Hey it's a tough job everyday doctors see thousands of wait staff related injuries ...so tip them accordingly..
Short answer is NO...
