My mother makes easily over a $100,000 a year and is only paying my younger sister to go to college. I have always wanted to go to college but she has said she doesn't have the money. I am struggling to make ends meet and I thins its unfair and favortism. Shoud I have a right to an education and should my mother make sacrifices to make my life easier. She always asks for my help and all I want is an education. What steps should I take ?

There isn't much you CAN do. Your mom is being a b*tch and you can't stop it.

You should have a right to an education. Your mother should pay for both, part of both, or neither. But, shoulds don't really seem to count when it comes to money...

Tell her that you think it is unfair and innapropriate for her to be doing this. Tell her that you plan to attend college regardless of her help, but she should know that if she is ever in need of your help, she can forget coming to you and go to your sister since you are going to be so in debt because of taking out loans.

Or you can do what I'm doing and make the occasional snide comment. I'm in a bit of a similar situation...

I think you should forget about trying to make her pay & just apply for Financial Aid. They will give you a grant (where you don't have to pay it back) if you are qualified. Otherwise, they will just loan you the money for school & give you maybe 10 years to pay it back, something like $50/monthly. Technically, as a mother -it's a good thing to help a child go through college & get that degree so they can have a good future, but....she's NOT entitled to pay your way through school if she doesn't want to. It's her decision. If i were you, maybe you can talk to her one more time, a serious talk & see what she says. If she says NO again, then you got other options (on your own). If not Financial Aid, then you can dip into your 401K -tax free.

I think it is unfair that she is paying for your sister to go and not you. Do you think if you offered to pay half she would help you? I think you should tell your mother how you feel. I totally understand why you would feel like she was playing favortism by paying for your sister to go to school and not you. The least she could do is help you. If it were me and I could not pay for both children to go to college then I would at least contribute to both.

No, your mom doesn't HAVE to pay for both educations. It would be nice, but she is playing favorites (I agree). What you need to do is go to the FAFSA webpage and get financial aid to go to college. That is what I did. My parents didn't want me to go to school, but I went anyway and I don't regret it. And when you graduate, you will be even more proud because you did it by yourself. And, if you are over a certain age, you will be considered an "adult student" and you will get tons of financial aid....this varies from state to state though. If there is a certain school you would like to attend, talk to the finacial aid department and they should be able to help you figure things out better. I wish you luck and please, please look into this. Trust me, you won't regret it.

That's not right for just you mom to pay for only for your sisters education.. Is she mad at you b/c you have not gotten good grades and feels that you may fail anyway? or maybe you have been in trouble? If not prove to her if she can't help you.. you yourself can do it on your own and be proud of yourself for doing so.

Your mother does not owe you anything.Have you tried to get a loan or apply for a scholarship or bursary?Be responsible and get a job and she might help you with some expenses.

You should get a job, get a loan, and go to school. She owes you nothing, She gave birth to you and raised you, that is the biggest sacrifice of all.
