does the placement of the bevels matter

Yes! Here at Brad Gilbert Tennis Nation, we grip the racquet differently if you are left-handed or right-handed. Generally, when you put on the grip, you work the grip towards your dominant hand. In other words, if you are right-handed, and you hold the grip with your right hand as you put it on, you wrap the grip tape to the right (counter clockwise if looking directly at the buttcap). It is vice versa for the left hand.

This is because of the tread direction your hand travels as you use the racquet on the court. For example, when you are hitting a forehand as a right-hander, you will notice the grip direction will do down and into your knuckles for a better grab. If you use a right-handed grip job as a left-hander, you'll see that the grip tape directs up.

But overall, if you have no preference, either one works fine. If you were looking for a detailed explanation of it - I hope I was able to relieve any of your doubts! :)

right handed: put on counter clock wise
left handed: put on clock wise

don't forget to start from the bottom of the handle and go towards the strings.

the placement of the bevels does not matter.

NO! Just make sure your grip reaches the bottom of the racquet and is neatly applied. Most people hold the racquet in their non-dominant hand (left hand for righties) and the tape in their dominant hand (right hand for righties) while rotating the racquet and feeding the tape to the racquet from the butt cap toward the head.
