Most people who go into the wilderness carry supplies of food (among other things) with them. People who actually must live off the land in a wilderness have a tough job finding edible plants. Most of the time, you'll end up eating bugs like grasshoppers and slugs. Be sure that they are dead before you swallow them. There are books that show pictures of edible plants, but in my experience it is usually still difficult to identify the same plant in the wild. Consider parsley, for example. It's a ringer for water hemlock, which is one of the most poisonous plants in North America. One mistake, blam, you're dead.

Don't forget to not get wet, don't forget to breathe, and find or make shelter from the elements first. That is first in wilderness survival before finding food.
