There is no point in figuring out what caused the Big Bang, anything that happened before that is simply not important. The laws of physics break down at a singularity, which is what the world started as, and anything before that possible could have completely different laws as to what we have now. The importance is after and whether the world has boundaries.

I'd have to say that the most interesting thing to date is using parallel universes and the "M" theory to predict beyond the singularity. Basically, what caused the big bang?
