they smell because bacteria that naturally resides in your skin and under your nails is now suddenly exposed to air. bacteria generally are foul smelling and if you haven't really cleaned your nails well (i'm talking spotless) that bacteria has built up since you last cut the nails.

I've never smelled anything. Maybe you have a nail fungus or something!
