China airlines was great.not only the less expensive but the best service and pilots.Food was great, the crew very courteous , and overall I would rate them very highly .. they met all my needs and then some.. We had several cancellations because of illness and a death in the family ,they were very accommodating and very professional..

China Airlines is the airline from Taiwan. China eastern is from mainland China.
Of the 2, the former is better. But if you have to take a Chinese airline, I would go for either EVA Air or Cathay Pacific.
Better safety record, and better options for entertainment and good service.

China Eastern is the worst airline I know. I fly over 60 flights a year (Europe, N. and S. Americas, Asia, Australia). And China Eastern is the worst ever hands down. Why? Well, we all know that every airline has some rude employees and sometimes delays. But China Eastern is extremely consistent with the rudeness and the delays. China airlines is okay. But in my opinion Air China is a bit better.

Accoding to the previous answers, online service seems good, but how do they treat complaints and accidents?
Some say there have been quit a lot of accidents... (see source)
Quoted: "One of the most dubious reputations belong to Taiwan's China Airlines. According to Airsafe, China Airlines has recorded seven crashes since 1980."

I flew Perth to Beijing via Ganzhou last year.
It was a normal flight. Adequate legroom, better that in some budget planes. Got fed and watered (its a full fare airline, not budget). All in all, apart from a bit of confusion for those of us changing planes at Ganzhou, it was a regular flying experience including O.K. checkin and boarding.
Don't think that there was any in-flight entertainment though, so take adequate books etc.
We did do wake up calisthenics/stretches though (Flew overnight) which was interesting.

yes i have. its pretty nice. half the food they serve is American. but the chinese food that they do serve is the kind thats popular with the non-chinese population so you'll probably like it. well even if you dont like it, its only a few meals anywayz and you get the cheaper airline ticket so who cares. hmm entertainmentwise, they usually play one english movie and one in chinese. but my flight was from USA to China. so hmm i dont know about flights from Australia...but my flight was pretty comfortable:]
