My vet told me a collie would do just fine in an apartment as long as I take him for a walk in the morning and in the evening. Anyone have any personal experience with this?

If you would truly like a collie, I would suggest finding a collie rescue group with an adult collie.

If you get an adult collie, you will be getting a housebroken dog with known temperment, likes, dislikes and some training---how much will depend on its former home.

A mature collie would do well with a couple of walks a day, hanging around with you on weekends and at night.

A collie PUP (like most active herding or working breeds) does best with lots of short bursts of exercise throughout the day, PLUS frequent potty breaks for the first few months. A 4 month old can "hold it" for 4 hours---max! Puppies cannot go on long walks--especially on pavement---or you risk damaging their hips.

Go to www.petfinder.org to find a collie--
OR go to http://www.collieclubofamerica.org/rescue.php

The collie club site has some rescues which i haven't seen on petfinder.

Here is an example listing of a dog on petfinder from a NJ Collie Rescue and Referral:

Notes: We have a very sweet PUREBRED collie. 6 years old.Neutered and perfectly house trained (naturally - hes a collie!) He is loving and sweet - just a little timid sometimes. He is really sweet and kind. Low keyed and gentle gentle gentle!!!!! Toven is a gentle friendly soul he is such a perfect companion dog. greets you at the door, loves leaning his head on you. loves the car and taking a walk. Loves other doggies, loves kids, walks beautifully on the leash, travels well in the car, a TRUE COLLIE GENTLEMAN!!! . Anyone would be lucky to get him. . E mail and request an adoption application for Toven and I will speak to you personally about our sweet collie boy!

Collies are awesome dogs, but as pups they require a great deal of socialization, exercise and training. I was raised around collies and I would not recommend a collie pup for an apartments unless you were going to be home a great deal during the day.

Best wishes.

I have a friend who has a golden retriever in an apartment. They always take it outside for at least an hour or two in the evening and let it run around the apartment. His dog is perfectly happy, but he is a very active person. If you want to get a large dog you should definitely consider the fact that you will have to dedicate a lot of time to it and take it out often. Also, don't get angry if it wants to run and jump a lot in the house! It can also depend on your neighbors. If you neighbors are going to complain about the noise and the herd of elephants running accross the floor, then don't do it.

No. Herding dogs need to be given a job and space to run. If you can take the dog out for exercise MORE than 2x a day and also have it enrolled in some type of program to help satisfy their herding instinct and are able to take it somewhere fenced in everyday to run around freely, then maybe but I doubt you'll be able to do all that so my advice is either look for a home with a big yard or consider another type of dog.

yes but sheepdogs need serious jobs to do and lots of walking time. I have an aussie shepherd and I actually have to give him stuff to do. If you insist on it get something like Dog Tricks for dummies.

On the other hand you can always get a shetland sheepdog. These look just like rough collies and you can even find one that looks just like lassie!!! They are Small though.

No, Collies need space to run around. Your Vet is an idot to tell you you only have to walk it twice a day and can leave it alone all day.

Small breeds are for aparmments. Anything bigger than a cocker spaniel needs to have a yard and more attention.

You should get a Sheltie instead. They are like a miniature collie. Larger dogs need lots of room to run and it will likely chew things up and be crazy in a small space.

Any larger dog (Collie, Shepherd, etc.) NEEDS an area to run around in. It is absolutely CRUEL to confine such an animal in an apartment.
And no, walking twice a day doesn't count as 'running around'.
For these dogs, running in wide areas is the joy of their lives.

A minature collie would do fine. But all collies are working/herding dogs and require lots of activity.

He would enjoy more room than an apartment. But you still can own one with lots of walks.

If want the same look but a smaller size go with a Sheltie

They are very similiar.
