Yup, at least they did better than the Dice-K deal. How else would you give a cy young winner in the AL. NL cy young winners aren't as good as AL. Glad to have ya Barry Zito. I'm looking at a couple of titles in the next 7 years.

No he isn't worth it over the length of his contract. He will pitch better in the National League but he is suseptible to injury because of his high pitch counts.

There is benefit in signing Zito that it is an attempt to show future free agents that the Giants are trying to win after Bonds retires. If the Giants are not at least semi-competative in the next few years then they will have difficulty attracting future good players. Even this year, the Giants could not convince Pierre and Gonzalez to sign with them instead of the Dodgers. The only way they were able to sign Zito was to vastly overbid the Mets by $48 million who seemed to be the only other serious team. It will be harder and harder to attract premire players the more the Giants continue to slide farther down in the standings.

The Giants farm system is almost depleted and had only one player listed in the top 50 prospects on the official minor league site. What makes it worse is if they choose to use Lincecum as a reliever, which would lessen his impact. Unfortunately the Giants traded away Liriano, Bonzer and Nathan who along with Cain and Lowry would have made the young Giants pitching staff the best in baseball.

Also unfortunately this week for Giants fans, Baseball America ranked the Dodgers (#2), Rockies (#3) and Diamondbacks (#4)as three of the top four minor league organizations. So in the coming years, these three teams should be loaded. This did not include the Padres who did win the division last year.

If the Giants can't develop their own star players which it looks like the farm system can't, and if the Giants can't attract them as free agents as they couldn't do this year, they will be in big trouble.

Zito's signing is a drop in a bucket towards those goals.

Here is what Rob Neyer had to say about Zito on ESPN:

"The only thing this deal does is make the Giants look ridiculous. Granted, Zito's ERA will get a boost from the National League and the Giants' home ballpark. And this one isn't as dumb as the Mike Hampton deal with the Rockies. But based on the facts at hand, this looks to me like one of the dumber free-agent signings ever. Zito just isn't very good."

126 million dollars for 7 years is a lot of money. I've read that Zito isn't good with fastballs and he's not likely to become the dominating pitcher that he was in 2000-2002. Seven years is also a very long time for a contract to a pitcher. What if Zito gets seriuosly hurt in the middle of the season? So, overall, the Giants did a good job of signing Zito if only for another year or two at the least.

Yes it was because we needed another pitching star, and Zito was the only one who could replace Schimdt, statwise. And Zito is a very durable and young pitching star. Personally, I thought that he would get $20 million per year according to today's money standards. And now all of a sudden we have a very bright pitching future and possibly present. With Zito, Cain, and Lowry locked up long term, in 2 or 3 years, we'll have a dominant starting rotation. And don't forget we have guys like Tim Lincecum and Adam Cowart(10-1, 1.08 ERA) in the farm system, guys who can become bright stars as early as 2008. And if Matt Morris can rebound for now, we can have a very decent rotation. If we can just get a power bat in there, we can become serious contenders. And it was also a happy cheer for the fans, because Schimdt went to the LA Dodgers, Barry might not play again, and after those misses with other stars, like Carlos Lee and Gary Matthews Jr. to name a few. And if we didn't get him, we would completely be toast. So signing him is definitely a good thing for the Giants.

Of course not. Zito is not worth that kind of money. The Giants are not that good of a team. Zito has no interest in winning a championship or he would have gone to a real contender. It's all about the money with this guy, not the rings.

Barry made a bad decision not going to the mets.
So in that regard, yes.

Otherwise, they got lucky that the yanks couldn't moved "The Big Unit"...which would have cleared some money to bring Zito in.

Lets see...
Zito has averaged 14 wins a season over his career. Is 14 wins a year worth $18 million a year? Nope.

well based on market value yes. i mean if pitchers like miguel batista, ted lilly, jeff suppan, and gil meche are getting 10 mil per year on long term deals, 18 mil for a prooven pitcher is a steal. ill put it this way. would you rather have miguel batista and gil meche or barry zito and 2 mil to spend on a proven reliever. also, any time you can sign a marquee pitcher to bring fans to the ballpark, especially one that already has a fan base in the california/bay area, you've done a good job.
