I am adopting a dog from a shelter who is being treated for heartworms. He had the first treatment and then had a very bad recation to it, so they had to wait for him to get stronger before he could have the last treatment. He should be ready by next week, but in the meantime they said I could take him home. I have 2 cats and plan to intoduce the animals in short supervised meetings very gradually, but can the dog pass the heartworms to the cats? I know typically heartworms are transmitted through mesquitos, but I am not sure if they can be passed any other way.

They can NOT be transmitted.

Be sure to keep you new dog crated and calm until his treatment is complete. Please talk to the vet and don't just listen to the shelter. There are specific precautions to bring the dog through successful HW treatment.

First sign is its ALWAYS a bad reaction and the next treatment is always a month later. It is a very painful treatment and Im happy you are going to help him through.

Heartworms are transmitted through mosquitoes.

When an infected mosquito bites a cat, it deposits baby heartworms (larvae). The larvae migrate and mature for several months, ending up in the right side of the heart and the pulmonary arteries. They mature into adult heartworms about six months from the time they enter the cat. Shortly thereafter, they begin to release immature heartworms, known as microfilaria. Microfilaria live in the cat's blood for about one month. They are ingested by mosquitoes feeding on the cat. (However, most mosquitoes acquire microfilaria by feeding on heartworm-infected dogs.)

Because of their life cycle, it is necessary for a cat to be bitten by a mosquito to be infected with heartworms. Heartworms are not transmitted directly from one cat to another nor from a dog directly to a cat.

in all risk, yet i'd supply the vet a ring and be conscious if it particularly is poisonous and what would be carried out to counteract the medicine. many situations, a double dose of medicine won't harm an animal even regardless of the indisputable fact that the Yorkie is so small which you will prefer to discover out the area effects and made attentive to any risk indications. there are a number of of procedures this would have have been given right here approximately such because of the fact the extra constructive canines now no longer swallowing the heartworm medicine. We constantly attempt to steer faraway from themes as nicely the actuality that injuries can happen. stable fulfillment!

Heartworm can NOT be passed on to other pets from your dog. It can only be transmitted by infected mosquitos.

the shelter should of told you before you could bring the dog home. But from my understanding, yes it could be passed on to other pets. It starts out as a microorganism and that can be passed threw the air. Be careful you don't catch it either. I would leave the dog at the center till it's cured.
Good Luck!
