cb is actually 11 meters and requires no linc. 10 meters is a ham band and requires a ham lincese ( the people on 10 meter will rat you out if you talk with no lincese ,so watch it - AND THEN there is the out band ,this is a section just above and just below cb that is like a buffer and is not used by the hams but BIG POWER BASE station and long haul truckers love ,I know I did .now some people will say I am talking abuot side band -I AM NOT ,this is different and better becacse SSB sucks -to use the out band you need a REAL high end CB or a 10 meter that has been converted to go from 9-11 meters ( i have a RANGER with a factory 100 watt kicker) as long as you STAY AWAY from 10 meter the FCC could care less about 11 meter or outbanders for that matter-just be polite and if some one asks why are you on this freq ,you are probably on 10 meters. it has been a couple of years since I did any out banding but my favorite "SKIP" was from MAINE to FLORIDA when the truck was facing south.if you want to check out the equipment google EXPORT RADIOS and they wil offer already converted RANGERS for about $500.00 ,I never said it was cheap! I had almost a grand in my radio and antenna - POLISHED MONKEY MADE ant was 140 bucks .

What BadMTS is talking about are called the free band above and below 11 meter. They are not used nor are they assigned.
IF you have one of the BIG bases (10 meter) and modify it, it is clearly illegal.
11 meter or CB is 40 channels with upper and lower side band, 4 watts AM and 12 SSB. No more...no linears (highly illegal).
10 meter is a licensed ham band with its appropriate power operations. Illegal to use unless you have passed your ham tests for technician and general class.
Hope this answers your question.

you do not choose a license to function on CB channels yet once you will perform on different freq.exterior of CB you will choose a operators license.you may call your community ametuer radio club for greater advice.
