Well, I am Italian and have been living in US for several years. As far as grammar is concerned, English is definitely easier. I would say that the hardest things in Italian are maybe genders (they have to be learnt by heart, there is no telling which gender an object is - like, for example, cat is masculine and tiger is feminine) and verbs (we do have a lot of irregularities). The sentence, however, is more flexible than in English and the pronunciation and spelling are very straightforward (those are probably two of the trickiest parts in English). All in all, I don't think Italian is too complicated, but the mentality of the language is actually slightly different from English (much more so than German, for example), so that might require some extra work on your part.
Hope this is satisfactory,
Marco

English was really a smash and grab job. We have stolen so much from other languages that we've ended up a kind of frankenstein language- especially now that we've been powered up and are evolving it on our own. English is probably one of the easiest languages to manage to 'get by', but definately not to actually learn correctly. We have no consistent rules on anything, from grammer to pronunciation. Although most anyone can pick up enough english words to say "hello, how much, where is the toilet" Italian is an easier language to learn on the whole.

I don't know. I understand some Italian because I'm a French speaker but I don't know which one is the hardest to learn.
But for me, English is really easy to learn compared to some other languages like German.

I'm italian and I think that the two languages are both difficult for different reasons: english is poor in grammar and morphology, but it is very rich of vocabulary and a single word has many different menanings.Italian has a hard grammar. In add, english is spoken in many different countries and each one has its slangs. But I think that if english is your mothertongue, you should try with another language.

Almost all uneducated english native speakers will reckon english is hard, but that's because they don't know about grammar and stuff.

English has very little rhyme or reason to conjigating verbs & making words plural, and a lot of inconsistent rules, so it is difficult to learn. The Italian language has many more consistencies in it, which results in fewer exceptions to rules and less memorizing.
