I grew up in New York City. Fabled home of the Mafia, still. Also used by Italians. I have absolutely no idea. I thought it was spelled ' guinea.' Unless Mario Puzo also got it wrong. Except I fail to see the connection between that and a domesticated pet resembling a Gerbil and a unit of English currency. Let me know when you find out. Etymology thrills me.

It's "Guinea" and it's an old derogatory term that attempts to associate Italians with Africans. Interestingly enough, Spain has picked up on the word to mean any foreigner who isn't liked. Stupidity travels very fast.

Maybe you mean the Gini coeficient, which is used to calculate the poverty rate?
And I am afraid that the Spanish word to mean foreigner is "guiri", not ginnie.
