it's basically saying that

Peter is saying that the end result of something is usually reached in a very complex way.

Basically that you can't learn everything in books, and creativity is more complex than you'd think.

I think Peter has figured out how to apply the lessons learned in his craft to life in general. For example, patience, persistence, constant practice to become more skilled, asking for help from a more experienced practicioner, being able to place a value on his work unflinchingly and with pride, etc. Of course, I could be wrong...
