Spanish is spoken by more people around the world and is the primary second language for much of the western world, particularly the U.S..
German is spoken primarily in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and is spoken as a second language by many in Holland, Denmark, Poland and the Czech Republic. There are only about 100 million native speakers of German compared to some 400 million native Spanish speakers.
Of course, learning a language depends on more than just the theoretical utility as measure by the number of people who speak it, otherwise everyone would speak English and Chinese! There is the question of your interest in the culture, the likelihood of traveling to the countries where the language is spoken and, of course, your personal preference. My daughter insists on learning French though it is harder to learn and we live in California where there are millions of Spanish speakers and few who speak French. She just loves the language.
If you are interested in German you might start by searching for the nearest Goethe Institute - link below. They exist to help spread German language and culture. They've cut back on the number of offices around the world but they are still a good resource and, if you live in or near a big city, may still be available.

In the US, Spanish would be more helpful but in Europe, German would be best.

Spanish definately. Especially in the US. You see it pretty much anywhere. It is also growing in many other countries around the world. German you basically only use in Germany, and some other European countries.

Based on your question I would recommend you learn English first, then move on to another language.
