Most likely it was a nerve pinched, the distribution along the back of your head comes from the cervical branches of your spine and they can be pressed on depending on how you position your neck. If it completely resolved, it's extremely unlikely its anything serious.
It's also highly unlikely this was a stroke. When you have a clot cut off blood to a part of your brain you have one of two this happen, either your sensory input is cut off (ie - you lose whatever sense is being fed into the brain...area gets numb, you lose vision, etc) or your lose muscle function (ie - arm droops, can't wiggle toes, etc). It doesn't sound like either of these happened so stroke is extremely unlikely.
The gasping for air could be associated with the pinched nerve or some other organ system. Your diaphragm is supplied by the nerves coming out at your Cervial #4 and Cervical #5 vertebrae and any inhibition would cause the sensation of shortness of breath (although muscle function was probably unaffected).
If you have any heart issues, this could also maybe be something called Paroxysmal Nocturnal Dyspnea and is a sign of problems with your heart.
I don't think you should do any follow-up, it's unlikely it's anything scary.

It was nothing probably. It sounds like you just had a small cluster of arterioles break. It stings when that happens.
They were probably old and your body just needs to grow new ones.
The fact that it alarmed you. (due to it's location, the brain), just frightened you. The dizziness and gasping for air was the slight interuption of the air supply going to your brain, when they broke.
It's very common and normal for that to happen from time to time.
If it happens again in the next couple of weeks, make an appointment with your doctor. It then, may be something more serious, like an embolism. You don't want to have a stroke.
Promise me. If it happens again, go tell your doctor.

you need to go to the hospital and see if somethings wrong, but something like that happened to me and i was asleep on the couch and my head was on the armrest and turns out i had cut off the circulation to my head(not my brain) and my scalp was numb and when i moved the sensation returned and it was all tingly, but the gasping for breath sounds bad i think you should see a doctor
