I'm not trying to be mean to anyone or anybody in particular...I was just wondering because my cousins only wish this Christmas was to not be mentally challenged...See my cousin was diagnosed with moderated to severe...I don't know what you would call it but he is slow..I wish that his wish could come true this Christmas..So what do you think..I'm crying just thinking about it.

Yes and No. You see, he will always be mentally challenged, but if the people around him, love and support him, he is not mentally challenged. He is just like anyone else, and he wants to be treated that way. I had a son like him, and he was really well liked in school. He was like anyone else. Wanted the same as anyone else. I saw him no different, and neither did the town, once they got to know him. Yes he was getting better, and learning more, each day. so don't give up. It is not him that is mentally challenged, it is those that treat him that way........

The reason for this is that most intellectually handicapped individuals are that way because of genetic or physical damage to their brains. Also, there are several chromosomal abnormalities which cause mental retardation. A common one is called Trisomy 21 or 23, which is due to a defect in those respective chromosomes. These individeuals often have features which caused the conditions to be called 'mongoloidism' due to the similarity of the physical features to what people saw as similar to the asian features of individuals from Mongolia...but that is just coincidence. but no, unfortunately we haven't discovered a way to reverse mental retardation. we know drinking or doing drugs while pregnant can cause it, so we can prevent it a little, but we have no way to cure it. i wish we did! all we can do is give people the best education possible but many don't even get that.

There is no cure but I've worked with a moderate/severe MR client once. He told me that he appreciated the love and support from his family and friends the most. So I agree with the others... love and support, not feelings bad about his situation. Stay strong!

People are in essence all the same... the same as your cousin.
Being mentally challenged only impairs his ability to learn, which is highly over-rated. It is unlearning which is wise.
He has been comparing unnecessarily, and all comparisons rob people of joy.
His problem isn't being slow, it's thinking that slow is bad.
