And if so, what in the world is wrong with America... and WHY are they making them smaller?

I am the same weight and I used to be a size 7 or 8, but I am now a size 4?

I guess that if it helps people. I am not overweight anyways, I have a 24" waist. But I still think that it is rather stupid to deceive people! What if they stop trying to eat healthy all because they dropped some sizes?

Jaycie, you are a dumbass. She was a size 16 in the 50's, and that today is now a size 8. It is NOT the same size. OK? Do a little research please.

I have been noticing that trend myself. I guess it is psychological for the clothing manufacturers. We American women seem to be getting bigger (not only fatter - but taller) and many of us refuse to buy a larger size, so every so often they widen the waistline so that those of us with enlarging waists will still buy the pants they need us to buy (so that they can stay in business)

But then they never used to have smaller than a size 6. They have just altered the sizing since then and it's no big deal.

What is a big deal is even with the current sizing, they still use vanity sizing, to make you believe you are thinner. For example you could be a size 8, but you find you fit into a size 6 or a 4 because the measurements are larger than they should be.

But if the rest of you is as tiny as your 24 inch waist, you should be a size 2 and with vanity sizing, probably a size 0!

HTH : )

We have all been fooled over Marilyn Monroe's dress size because of vanity sizing. A "12" in the early 1960s would be called an "8" today to make women feel better about themselves. In today's sizes, she was no more than an 8. By the way, did you see the recent numbers that the average US woman in 1960 was 5'3" tall, and the average weight was 140 compared to today's average height of 5'4" and weight of ... gulp ... 164. Mind you, some women carry that well, but that is the size a fit man used to be.

More common brands like Old Navy, Gap (you know the stuff you wear everyday) and other big brands noticed that people are getting conscious of their size with obesity on the rise. If you are conscious and you think you are fat, You won't shop. But if you think you're "hot" you will $$$. So they all decided to change the sizing of clothes. High end brands like DKNY still use the old sizing charts on their upscale lines.

The size number got smaller so that people would feel good about buying clothes!
If you are a smaller size, you will feel better, ant then you will buy more clothes.
I know that i some teen/juniors stores, they have negative sizes. That way you feel super, super skinny and then you will buy more from that store

Most clothes worn in America are not made in America. I started noticing the changes in sizes when I bought clothes made in other countries.

no, marilyn was a size fourteen and that was still a fourteen like it is now. the only thing that changes is how the media treats it. back then they liked curvy, real women, and now everything is geared towards tiny people. if everyone just learned to love their curves and realize that it's okay to be different, it would be way easier to be a woman. also, some o fthe most highly paid models aren't tiny and anorexic. it's not the sizes either. you could have just toned your body. my weight is the same and i'm a size six now. it's just how your body changes over time, not how much you weigh.

I think because of all us Americans getting fat or anorexic. I mean they are trying to make people think that they are skinnier that they really are!
