Here's a good overview of the subject:
Weight Loss:
Prescription Weight Loss Medicine
Obesity often requires long-term treatment to promote and sustain weight loss. As in other chronic conditions, such as diabetes or high blood pressure, use of prescription medications may be appropriate for some people. While most side effects of prescription medications for obesity are mild, serious complications have been reported (see below.)

Amphetamines etc act as appetite suppressants and thyroid extract can speed up your metabolism but are NOT good, long-term methods for losing weight. Laxatives encourage emptying of the bowels and if you take certain types of laxatives they can interfere with absorption of certain nutrients; not a good idea long-term. Diuretics cause the body to lose water and may only help temporarily.
Long-term: if you want to lose weight, the best method is by a slow-ish process of changing your diet so you can keep up a good healthy dietary regime over a long period (reducing animal fats and refined sugars and increasing fibre/complex carbohydrates) and by getting plenty of exercise.
Don't go in for fad diets as they are generally unhealthy long-term.

Appetite suppressants work on your hunger signals so you do not feel hungry. Laxatives force your bowel movement, and diuretics force your body to release stored liquids-make you pee. Some medications can do all three. Have happy and healthy holidays.

It's called eating high-fiber foods. I lost 40 pound in just 4 months by restricting my diet to low-fat vegetarian foods (for the most part). Eat: Beans, Brown Rice, Vegetables, Whole Grains, and Fruit. Eat when you are hungry and until you are full. Avoid: All oils (except one oil tablet per day), meat, butter, margerine, salid dressings, nuts, avocados, milk products, processed foods, sugars, fruit juice (absored too fast), and refined carbohydrates, and so on. This diet gives you incredible energy and makes the pounds float off without much effort.

On breakfast, go ahead and drink orange juice. But throughout other day, focus on water as opposed to juice or soda

Always have vegetables on hand. Saute a big bag involving frozen mixed vegetables in olive oil and garlic. Add some red pepper or turmeric for additional flavor and separate into portion-sized containers for your fridge.

Distracted dining can get you in trouble. Avoid eating before a television or in a cinema, as you're bound to take in more calories.
