Millions of years of water eroding rock, wind eroding rock, and rock eroding rock. This can happen far inland from the sea, where the eroded material is transported downhill to the ocean and deposited at the end of the river, forming deltas and beaches.

Sand in made up of ground quartz and rocks and other debris. The waves mash it up, i think.
