I did this. Take double sided, clear tape and wrap it around the sofa and arms. I'll warn you that you will hear a ruckus and your cat may walk around with tape on it's paws, but your furniture will be safe. AND it's not painful or cruel. Good luck.

There is a repellant that you can buy to spray on your couch, cats dont like the smell of it and most likely will avoid it.

Also, everytime it scratches pick it up and take it to the scratching post, sometimes they get the hint. (you never know with cats, lol)

I have a little cat house type thing, thats all in carpet, so the cat can play in it, and also use it as a scratching post. Some come with a scat nip scent, so it may lure kitty to scratch there instead of the couch. I made sure everytime my cat went for the couch, that I took him to his 'house' so now he will scratch there. Sometimes he'll come to the couch, but its very rare.

aside from repellant and a scatching post i dont know what else to say. cat's can be very stubborn and may do that for attention or because they are upset, or just because thats where they think they should sharpen their claws.

good luck.

Throw a sofa cover over it for a while, then spray the sofa cover with a repellant product from the pet store.

Give lots of other scratching options. Cats like a variety of options, some horizontal, some vertical, sometimes sisal, sometimes carpet or wood. Stretching is really important for their muscles and that's an instinct. So is placing scent on objects via their paws. They're not really trying to be naughty.

You can also use SoftPaws for the front claws and they work pretty well. You will just have to keep up with putting on the nail tips when they fall off. :)

i have this problem- i just throw a cuddly fleece blanket over the couch before bedtime- the cats want to sleep on it rather than scratch it- and if they scratch the blanket- it's not noticeable at all. couch is saved- no big deal! why spray pepper repellent all over it? i
m telling you that will make you cough and wheeze if you breathe it in, and will bother you more then the cat- (i know from experience.) also, you won't have to deal with sticky messy ugly tape with hair stuck to it. you'll have to keep changing it. just get 1 or 2 blankets- you probably already have some anyway.

There is a special kind of tape out there, I'm not sure what it's called, but it is sticky on both sides. Put it on you couch when you go to sleep and after a time or two of scratching it should stop, cause cats hate that stuff.

My cat would do this also, so I found that if I draped blankets over the areas she favored before I went to bed, she would claw them instead.
There is also a spray available in the pet store that is supposed to keep animals from the furniture, although I haven't used it.
Finally, when she would claw the furniture while I was awake, I would spray her with water from a spray bottle while saying "no" very firmly.
Good luck with your cat, and Happy Holidays!

Don't lock her up, but keep her out of the room where she's doing the damage. Put her in your room with you, the spare room etc. It's just while you sleep (make sure she has food, water and littler pan). My room and my bathroom make a pretty big space- when my cats had surgery and couldn't be out running around, I just closed them in w/ me and gave them extra room with the bathroom open. Before this you could try distracting her if you haven't already- scrathching boards and posts etc...

They have a repellent at petco, I don't think it really works to be honest. For a cheap easy fix put tinfoil on the areas shes scratching b4 u go to bed they hate it! May break her from the habit. good luck!

buy a scratching post. the cat will most likely choose that over your couch. they arent that expensive. go for it.

edit... also look into that repellant you spray on furnature. that should do the trick.

If water won't damage your sofa, cober the area where she scrachtes with a soaking wet towell. BELIEVE ME THIS WORKS. My cat used to jump on the kitchen counters and we tried it and it worked.
