Are dachshunds females(girls) more affectionate than males(boys)? Is there any difference in gender. I'm planning on getting a male, however, I've heard sometimes that females make better dogs, they're sweeter. Is this true?

Well usually the castrated ones are much milder. Usually the boys are more territorials (not castrated), at least mine is very much so. I have heard that non castrated girls get along better then 2 non castrated boys. If you don't want to go through this ordeal of castrating the dog again and you still want a different sex, just keep them separated when she does come in heat. I've done that many times with my guys here. The boy will cry and cry and cry and be very mad at you, but the heat will go off soon (2-3 weeks) and they can be put together again (if you don't want puppies). Crates work marvelously. I have heard that you need much more care for the wire haired ones. Long haired, in my opinion, are better than wire haired, because the hair is silkier, you can comb easier. Well you need to comb at least once a week for both of these, especially around the ears and tails, where they tend to form some "hairballs". Short haired are definitely easier to care for than the other 2 types. I particularly have 3 long haired ones, I love them and bathe them every week and keep up with their hair, because they too stay outside a lot. I hope you can find the puppy of your wish and add to your happy family!

Being a vet tech, I have found that males in general are nicer dogs (at least to their owners). They also tend to be nicer when they come into the clinic. Females can get very snappy & dominant. I have four dogs & all are males for that reason.
One thing about dachshunds, they tend to not be the nicest personality dogs to people other than their owner. So you could have the sweetest dog to you, but you may just have to watch when your friends come over.

I've heard both.

Most people will say that the sex really dosen't make an overly huge difference. But I have heard a few people say that thier females were more dependant towards them than the males were.

however there is no guarentee. A female could be more/less "loving" than a male, just depends on the dog!

I have a female mini-dachshund & she has been the sweetest thing since she was born. She's not neutered. She was the runt of the litter, & I happen to think that's the reason why. She loves EVERYONE in my family, she is very friendly, & I just love her.

The woman who sold her to me said one of the boys she sold was anti-social & didn't even like to be touched. But every dog is different.

However, if you get a girl, be prepared for that 3-week period unless you plan to fix her.!
Good luck :-)

It all comes down to personality of the individual dog. Females may be calmer then males (especially once you have spayed them), but that is no guarantee. Make sure you buy from a reputable breeder who can show you the parents (or at least the mother). Pet store dogs are more likely to have both physical and emotional issues. Good luck!

Our grandparents have been breeding these dogs for over 40 yrs. When you go meet the litter sit down and play with all of them. Let the puppy pick you. It doesn't matter what the sex is unless you definitely do not want a female. All dogs are different and I agree, it's the way you treat them. And these are great little dogs.

I have found that female dogs are always more loyal not as affectionate as boys but not far off. I will always choose a girl dog over a boy.

as in all breeds male dogs tend to be alot more loyal and more willing to please, this has its exceptions of course but in general that's true. females tend to get a little snappy and kind of "weird" as they get older, this is due to the hormones of a female. either way though dachshunds are great dogs! good luck!

i have a male. he's the sweetest thing. if you don't plan on breeding, spay or neuter whichever sex you get. if you do plan on it, females are more time consuming, and that's with any breed. puppy periods, keeping the puppies, etc. they make great apartment dogs, just make sure you crate train him/her. mine learned in 3 weeks. you just need to be consistent. if you want, you can email me if you need more info.

Both.. Because daschund always depend to its friend. If you let them grew alone, they won't be able to be active as much as you let them grow with its spouse. Beside that its not that hard to keep both of them. They are an "easy to keep" dogs. I can guarantee that they are also loyal and spoil and also easy to handle.
