Maybe your friend felt as if she owed you something, maybe you minded her children or she forgot to pay you back for a coffee or something and that was her way of making things even.
One of my friends did the same and I asked her why and it turned out that I had payed for lunch several times and she had forgotten to pay me back.

You are so right. My wife and I give each other a nice gift then go on a 2 day holiday to the beach. We are never at home on Christmas and people have learned not to come over. Our families are many miles away and do not even bother anymore.
I have always said Christmas is out of hand. If you participate you go broke until March, if you don't you are a curmudgeon or bad person. So I just disappear.
Don't feel bad, she is the one who could not follow instructions.

That is a low blow, and if you all agree to not give gifts, and instead spend time together, than it was a little wrong for them to do so.

Christmas can easily get out of hand, but if one tries to keep the reason for the season in mind, and remember Jesus'ss role in our lives, then it is worth going all out for.

((My wife and I, my sister and her husband, and our best friend have all agreed NOT to do Christmas gifts and just go out together for a nice diner or what-not.)

Any good hearted human would feel terrible, but you should not feel this way. In fact, you should not have accepted that gift. Some people do this just to get on your nerves. If this is your friend, maybe she felt moved to give you a gift and did not want you to give her anything.

This happens a lot to a lot of families. Xmas is stressful do to all of the shopping and comercialization. Don't feel bad you've got a family with kids they come first.

X-mas has been out of hand for a long time. It's odd to me being a Christian that when it's my birthday I recieve gifts, not my friends, and family. The whole idea of Christmas since I've been alive is a complete sham, and people try to make it a religious experience. wwjd

well a good way to solve this is by buying Concern presants. You just sent whatever amount of money you intend on spending on someone to concern and you give that person a leaflet about what the money is buying whether its a well for a town or blankets for 10 families. Just saying!

I think many people need to get back to the meaning of Christmas.

If your friend wanted to give a gift, gladly accept it. There is no reason you should feel bad, because YOU stuck to the original agreement.

Christmas had been out of hand since it was hijacked by multi national companies in the late 70's.
oh and p.s I think that was a bit insensitive and/or rude of your friend to put you in that position. If that had happened to me I wouldn't have gone and got my mate something, especially if we had alreadfy agreed not to.
