Actually, it's above 1024, not 1000. And I'd recommend something higher than 1040.

Ports at 1024 and below are the "well-known" ports. Certain services will use one or more by default regardless of what machine the service runs on. Two good examples are SMTP on port 25 and HTTP on port 80.

To avoid possible conflict with well-known ports, always use ports higher than 1024. Microsoft also has several services that use ports 1025 - 1034 so I'd recommend going higher than 1040 to be safe, at least on Microsoft boxes or when connecting to a MS box.

they don't have to be.
You can change the port the app is using in preferences.
I set mine to 39772
