You must go through training and such in order to become a cop. If you make it through training and pass, then you can work your way up to become an undercover cop, but I would assume that it would take time and commitment. No offense but if all you're thinking about is wanting to dress like a "gangbanger" then this would not be the profession that would be right for you. It is a huge responsibility to become a cop and with it comes respect from many, but if all you think about when considering becoming a member of law enforcement is that you want to keep the ability to dress in civilian clothes, then maybe you should consider another line of duty. Whatever you decide, good luck in the future.

Not when you first go to work, now when you are not on duty, you can dress anyway you want to dress.
But as a police officer you will start by wearing a uniform, after several years on duty you can apply to work for another squad, but only a very few will work undercover and then not for long at a time normally.

Do you think that they stay in uniform 24/7. Of course they are still police officers off duty and if they see a crime happening they don't mind the overtime or reporting of it. They are out there
. Also some officers go under cover in which case they would have civies on, or be made up to look like they belong to a certain group they are surveying.

Not when you're starting out. If you're a detective or whatever, or are undercover you'd get to wear civilian clothes, but you don't get to start there. However, I think that detectives are expected to dress respectively, and undercover officers have to dress appropriately for whatever their cover is, so you still wouldn't get to wear just whatever you wanted.

Of coarse not. Not unless you're working undercover, and that will take a few years to be chosen for those kinds of assignments.

If you switch to the drug squad or undercover unit for example. Typically, you have to be a patrol officer when you are hired, and patrol officers wear uniforms.
