use Ms. when you don't know if the woman is married...use Mrs. if the woman is married

Mrs. is a title that indicates the person is married. Some married women do not like that title.

A lot of people are just using Ms. instead of either Miss or Mrs.

I say Ms. all the time whether I'm talking to a Mrs. or not. It's just shorter and everyone knows they're married anyways. You've got to be a real jerk to get upset about somebody calling you the wrong title, anyways. Don't lose any sleep over it.

I know a woman who is married but uses Ms saying it's none of someone's business to know details of her personal life.
If you said Ms and that person wishes to be called Mrs she will tell you so.

Is it a business associate? Ms. is safe there. If you don't know if she's married or not, don't assume. If I'm in a restaurant, trying to get the server's attention, I'll say "Miss" no matter her age. Just be respectful.
