I just read a study in a medical journal about rape. the found that in countries were prostitution is legal, the rape rate is significantly lower that in countries were prostitution is illegal. The correlation between legalized prostitution and decreased levels of rape was significant. According to the statistics, if prostitution was legalized in America, at least 25,000 rapes could be prevented every year. Do women feel this is a good reason to legalize prostitution???

well in theory, fathers teaching thier kids to repsect women would be ideal, but what about all the kids who grow up without fathers or the kids who grow up in orphanages. what about them. its good in theory but i doubt it could ever work.

I am willing to have prostitution decriminalized, as long as it is HEAVILY regulated by the government (age limits, health/abortion benefits, etc.), and as long as no one is forced into it. That stat did influence my opinion a little. Thanks.

Well, the way the law was explained to me is that prostitution is not illegal, it's the soliciting that is illegal, that's how the cops get the prostitutes, by getting them to state the price thus the soliciting.

If prostitution by virtue of its meaning were illegal every wife would be in jail.

Putting that aside, rape has nothing to do with prostitution, its a power and control issue.

As long as people have a sick need to have power over others and control them rape will continue, whether or not prostitution is legal or not.

Wow . Loaded question. I am a rape victim several times over. If prostitution was legalized I think that we would be better off. But even if were there still remain the lowlife predators that take what they want no matter. If prostitution was legalized the bastards would go for having to pay no restitution at all. No excuse for any man to abuse a female. Sexually especially. There excuses are 'I am sick' like pedophiles, or 'She was a prostitute! Who the hell would care that I raped and killed her. She was a dirty whore.' You know what is the excuse for the necrophiliac? 'Wow.Let's f*** this. Why not she can't talk nor move!' That will never end. Unfortunately. Is our society. Politicians want the revenue. Plain and simple. As for the men who do this they are the very ones that abuse their girlfriends and wives too. I will not elaborate. Because no male will ever abuse me in that way again. There are many men that do not do that. That thought never crosses ther mind. But the ones that say to me that they would never do that to a woman. Wow. I stand back and stand guard. And the only man I know means it when he says it I stand back and stand by.

well, from a sociological point of view, I would say the study is flawed. They are assuming a correlation with out proving it.

There are many countries with legal (or suto legal) prostitution, but very high rape rates.

I would say the more likely correlation is that countries where women have a higher social standing, and equal rights tend to have legalized prostitution (putting women in power of the sex industry, rather then masters and pimps). And these same countries, that have more rights for women, and legalized prostitution have lower rape instances.

So long story short.. give women power over their bodies, allow them to control the sex work, and you have a country with lower rape rates.

Power for women = Less rape

not

easy access to prostitution = less rape.

(hum, I wonder what the rape rate is in Nevada, that would be worth looking into)

I don't see the correlation here. Just because prostitutes are avail. doesn't mean men woudn't rape. Rape is about control and they choose their victims for a lot of reasons not simply because they're "available for sex". I think if prost. was legalized men would cheat more often and think it's ok.

I don't think it should be legalized, however it goes on in the states anyway whether it's legalized or not. Maybe we just have more sexual preverts than they do. Don't think it would make much difference, Rape is a crime of control over a situation, not really as much about being sexually deprived but about being a control freak and being deranged.

Personally, I don't feel that any statistic is worth a woman reducing herself to prositiution. In all reality, the rape statistic may drop, but the HIV/AIDS percentages would sharply rise. More fathers should be actively involved in their son's lives in order to teach them how they should treat a woman, with dignity and respect.

No point asking a group that can't be prosecuted for rape and in any event wants things both ways regardless.

It could be a good thing but then again it could be bad. If they legalized it then the rapists may just feel as if doing what they do is perfectly fine and then there may be more.

I don't know what America is thinking. It's out there anyway whether they like it or not. They should legalize the oldest trade in the world.
