I am aware that any male Taiwanese citizen must do mandatory military service upon turning 18. I'm a U.S. citizen as well and I was wondering if I were to return to Taiwan on a trip, will I be detained and forced into military service, or will my U.S. citizenship override that law?

You can keep dual nationality despite your age, the 18 year oldtake your choice rule has not been in effect for several years. Go to better source of information than Yahoo Answers if you have abny doubt about military service obligations if you return to Taiwan for a visit.

Travel with your American passport. And no, you will not be detained by Taiwanese authorities. My cousin (who is 23) has dual citizenship as well (Costa Rica and Taiwanese). He never served for the Taiwanese military. He goes to Taiwan every year carrying his Costa Rican passport and nothing has happened to him.

First of all, if you are under 18 it is legal, but I think you still need a passport to get on the plane. However, when you turn 18 you are suposed to choose where you want your citizenship, effectivly denouncing your Citizenship in one area. Unless you moved to the US after you turned 18. Then I think it is legal to have dual citizenship. Thank you government class.

Do not use your Taiwanese passport when you return to Taiwan. Instead, use the US passport when you go there.
